One of the leading lights of the 90’s alternative folk movement, Lisa Loeb continues to write and perform powerfully intimate and melodically-charged tunes like her #1 smash hit “Stay (I Missed You)”- a song that remains the only single by an unsigned artist to top the Billboard pop charts.
The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, recognized the world over for her now iconic cat-eye glasses, may have launched her career in 1994 with the platinum-selling “Stay (I Missed You)” from the iconic X Generation film Reality Bites, but her story was just getting started. She has since released eleven acclaimed studio records, including 2016’s Feel What You Feel.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Loeb earned her degree in comparative literature from Brown University, where she experienced her first taste of real musical success with the duo, Liz and Lisa (which included folk singer Elizabeth Mitchell and singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik on guitar)). The pair built a substantial following on campus and often booked shows in New York on the weekends. When Loeb moved to New York City after graduation, she continued to develop her vision, this time as a solo artist, and hone her artistic talents while carefully managing the business side of her career. Good fortune struck when her friend and neighbor, actor Ethan Hawke, recommended Loeb’s demo “Stay (I Missed You)” for inclusion in the film Reality Bites. The song was included in the final credits and suddenly shot up the charts. After the runaway success of “Stay (I Missed You),” Loeb signed a major label deal with Geffen Records, releasing her major label debut Tails in 1995. Two years later she struck gold again with the hit single “I Do” on her sophomore record Firecracker. Always artistically restless, Loeb successfully parlayed her musical success into a multi-dimensional career encompassing film, television, voice-over work and children’s recordings. Just this past fall, Loeb collaborated with The Office’s Craig Robinson for an all-ages single called “Feel What You Feel,” the title track for the subsequent children’s record released in late 2016.
