A vocalist of uncommon talent and spirit who slides effortlessly between jazz, R&B, gospel, blues and folk, Lizz Wright has a smoky, supple voice that has beguiled fans and critics alike for over a decade.
Ms. Wright burst onto the scene in 2003 with her head-turning debut Salt, which announced to the world the presence of a sparkling new voice. Prior to her debut, she had cultivated her style through a childhood in the church singing gospel, and later studying music at Georgia State. In Atlanta, she joined the popular vocal group In the Spirit and was soon being recognized throughout the country for her powerful voice and presence. A record deal with the famed Verve Records soon followed.
On the heels of her debut, Wright didn’t let up, touring the U.S. and recording her follow up Dreaming Wide Awake – a stunning set that doubled down on the promise of her debut and rose to #1 on the Contemporary Jazz charts. Her third record, 2008’s The Orchard, found Wright pivoting to a rootsier/folk direction, working with a wide assortment of collaborators including members of indie rock stalwarts Calexico and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell among others.
Never one to sit still, Wright went back to her gospel roots for 2010’s Fellowship, which boasted guest spots by Angelique Kidjo and Me’Shell Ndegeocello. Her most recent effort, 2015’s Freedom & Surrender, featured a set almost entirely made up of originals.
