Celebrating 40 Years of Music!

Here at Rockport Music we had the opportunity these last 15 months to think about how we might best celebrate our founding and history during this, our 40th anniversary season. We sorted through hundreds of photos and clippings, listened to and digitized hundreds of concerts, recorded interviews of former Trustees, volunteers and staff, and archived program books from the last 40 years. The digital magazine and accompanying web-based archival library are the result.

When you’ve been that immersed in Rockport Music’s history as we have, you quickly understand that the essential qualities that define Rockport Music existed from the very start. Simply put, they are a passion for music excellently performed, the desire to create a vision and enact upon it, and the commitment to make it all happen.  When the founders first mused about the idea of having concerts in Rockport, little did they know then how that passion and vision would endure!

That same passion and vision has also given us the stunning Shalin Liu Performance Center, now in its 11th year. With celebrated acoustics and visual beauty, it is home to a 52-week season that includes not only the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, but also Jazz and Celtic festivals, concerts in many other genres and broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera, National Theatre, and more.

I am reminded of the quote displayed over the elevator in the lobby of the Shalin Liu Performance Center – “We stand on the shoulders of those that came before us”.  That is the essence of Rockport Music’s success. Our thanks go to our founders, our leaders and all those shoulders, without whom we would not be here.

Enjoy our 40th Anniversary magazine, video interviews and archives. We look forward to seeing all of you as we return to live music, our love and passion!
